Do you wish your home had more natural light? Maybe your home has plenty of windows already, but they’re old and drafty. If it’s time to update your windows or install new ones to improve the overall look and feel of your home, you have many options. Learn about several different types of beautiful windows that will let in the sunshine to make your home warm and cheery.
Types of Windows
Single- and Double-Hung Windows
Single-hung windows have one sash (moveable part composed of the frame that holds the glass) that can move up and down while double-hung windows have two that can be opened from the top, bottom, or both. Since these types of windows don’t swing outward, they can be installed in tighter spaces, such as in walls that face a deck or walkway.
Casement Windows
Hinged on the side, casement windows swing outward with the turn of a handle. These windows offer great ventilation and views of the outdoors since they can fully open. Consider installing casement windows in hard-to-reach places, such as above the sink in the kitchen or behind the bathtub in the bathroom.
Bow and Bay Windows
Bay and bow windows offer a large, wide view of the outdoors. Bay windows are typically composed of three panels with a fixed window in the middle and two venting windows (casement or double hung) on the right and left. The protrusion creates a curve to greatly improve outdoor visibility and increase your home’s natural light. Bow windows are four or more windows, often similar in size, that also form a curve; you can choose any combination of fixed and venting windows. These windows also create more open space inside since they protrude outside. Installing either of these types of windows allows you to also add a window seat to your home where you can sit and read or chat with a friend or family member.
Sliding Windows
Sliding windows glide horizontally to open or close, allowing for full ventilation from top to bottom. Like single- and double-hung windows, these windows can be placed in tight spaces since they don’t swing outward.
Picture Windows
A picture window is fixed, meaning it doesn’t open or close. Since they don’t vent, they can be highly energy efficient. Install this type of window if you love looking at your yard or have a beautiful outdoor view. Since these windows are often very large, you can let in the heat from the sun during the winter without having to worry about cold drafts sweeping in like they would in your windows that do open. Keep in mind, however, that during the summer, the heat from the sun that sweeps into your home may force you to crank up the air conditioner.
Awning Windows
Awning windows are often placed above or below other larger windows for extra light or aesthetic appeal. Open and shut awning windows easily by turning a handle. These windows are hinged at the top and open outward from the bottom.
